What Is Casual California Cuisine?

The food we cook and serve at Sunny Side Kitchen is a little eclectic, a little difficult to define. However, I’ve found that Casual California Cuisine is what suits us best. Here’s why.

It’s what I grew up with in the Los Angeles suburb of Temple City. My mom, also born and raised in Southern California, consciously cooked with fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and poultry, almonds, walnuts, whole grains … the things California is known to have in abundance. My grandparents, who lived in Eagle Rock and with whom we had dinner about once a week, had a gorgeous avocado tree in their backyard, as well as grape vines and tomato plants. My grandfather also brewed his own beer, but that’s a story for another day.

It’s a reflection of the many cultures living here. So many people have brought delicious foods from all over this country and the entire world, and we’ve tried to adopt some of those flavors here. Influences include Mexico and the Mediterranean, San Francisco and Wisconsin (coincidentally where Bob was born). Our cheese choices, some of our soups and salads, as well as our yummy quiches are reflective of multiple cultures.

And it’s moderation. Southern Californians love to be outdoors, to enjoy the sunshine and abundance of nature. We also love to eat. So at Sunny Side Kitchen we’ve tried to bring the best ingredients in the right portions. There’s some sweet, some savory, some bitter and some fat, all balanced as best we can. Our cookies are bite-sized, so you can enjoy a few after your meal. Our salads and sandwiches are available in half and full sizes, so you can decide for yourself which is the right amount. Portions aren’t outrageous because we know breakfast and lunch are just one part of your beautiful California day, and not something you want to regret.

See you soon at Sunny Side Kitchen!
